Why do cats shed so much?

Cats shed all year round, but they shed more during certain times of the year, such as spring and fall. This is because cats have a double coat of fur. The outer coat is made of long, guard hairs that help to protect the cat from the elements. The inner coat is made of short, fluffy fur that helps to keep the cat warm. During the spring and fall, cats shed their winter coat in preparation for the new season.

There are a number of factors that can contribute to excessive shedding in cats, including:

  • Diet. A poor diet can lead to dry, brittle fur, which can make it more likely to fall out.
  • Age. Older cats tend to shed more than younger cats.
  • Health problems. Certain health problems, such as hyperthyroidism and allergies, can also lead to excessive shedding.
  • Stress. Cats that are stressed may shed more.
  • Hormonal changes. Cats that are pregnant or nursing may shed more.
  • Seasonal changes. As mentioned above, cats tend to shed more during the spring and fall.

If you are concerned about your cat's shedding, there are a number of things you can do to help reduce it. These include:

  • Brush your cat regularly. This will help to remove loose fur and distribute natural oils throughout the coat.
  • Feed your cat a high-quality diet. A good diet will help to keep your cat's fur healthy and shiny.
  • Take your cat to the vet for regular checkups. This will help to catch any health problems early on.
  • Reduce stress in your cat's life. This could involve providing them with more toys and activities, or making sure they have a quiet place to sleep.
  • If you are still concerned about your cat's shedding, you may want to talk to your veterinarian. They may be able to recommend additional treatments or medications.Â
